How Much Wool Pellets to Use

Because wool pellets slowly break down and release nutrients over time, a little goes a long way. The goal is to mix them into soil where roots can benefit from their moisture-holding and nutrient-releasing properties.

Planting New Plants or Vegetables

When transplanting vegetables, flowers, or shrubs:

  1. Add a small handful of pellets into the planting hole

  2. Cover with a little soil

  3. Set the plant in place and fill with soil

This places the nutrients directly where roots will grow.

Garden Beds

Mix 1–2 cups of wool pellets per square foot of garden soil before planting. Keeping them in areas where plants will be located.

Work the pellets into the top few inches of soil so they sit near the root zone where they can hold moisture and gradually release nutrients.

Raised Beds - with established bulbs etc.

For raised beds, mix ½–1 pound of wool pellets per square yard of soil when preparing beds in spring. Work them into the soil gently, being careful around bulbs and small plants.

If plants are already growing, sprinkle pellets around the base of plants and lightly work them into the top layer of soil.

Containers & Pots

For container gardening, mix:

1–2 tablespoons per small pot (4–6 inch)
¼ cup per medium container (10–12 inch)
½ cup per large planter

Blend the pellets into potting soil before planting.

Because containers dry out quickly, wool pellets can help retain moisture and reduce watering frequency.
